The
Logosol PMX chain provides rapid longitudinal sawing with a thin kerf.
But it is more sensitive than normal chains. Still, if you keep the equipment
in trim you will get the right measurements, faster sawing, longer working
life on chains and guide bars, as well as reduced chain-oil and energy
File before the going gets rough Reduced cutting speed, hot guide bar and heavier feeding are signs that the edge on the chain is dulling. Stop sawing at once! In reality, itís already too late to file. Sawing with a dull chain exposes the equipment to immense strains. Always file before the chain is dull! File comfortably Both hand filing and electrical chain grinding work well. Itís quicker and easier to use a machine. If you choose to do it manually, we recommend a double file with a built-in runner file. (See Product Catalogue) Itís much easier to file the chain if you have a good workplace. Fix the chainsaw guide bar in a vice or a saw clamp. Itís preferable to build a special table next to the sawmill where you do filing and other machine maintenance. If you have an electric saw youíll need a filing block to hold the chain during filing. Avoid chain breakage The chain can break if you saw too long when itís dull. The chain breaks just below the tooth and if you look closely, you can see the wear. However, if the chain link breaks, the cause can be that chain and drive are mismatched. For maximal chain and saw life, alternate five chains on one chain drive and when the chains are worn out, replace the whole set-up. A completely new chain can break after only a few minutes if run on a worn out drive Using a 3/8" chain and a Picco chain on the same drive is not recommended. The guide bar
can pull to the side If the chain is damaged on one side or has been filed unevenly, it can pull to the side. The guide bar is then pushed upwards or downwards and jumps when it comes out of the lead. If that happens the chain will wear more on one of the guide bar arms and after a while the guide bar becomes crooked. Even if you replace the chain, a lopsided guide bar will pull wrong and wear the new chain wrong as well. A lopsided guide bar can be repaired. The answer is to file the guide bar arms evenly using an UKF-file. Another, more common reason that the guide bar pulls off to one side is that it so worn out that the drive link bottoms in the track and the chain loses its support from the guide bar arms. If this is the case, the drive link tip will be worn. The best chain oil The best chain oil
is sticky and stringy. Check by taking a drop between the thumb and the
index finger. Open the fingers slowly and look for the long threads of
oil. I hope these tips can be useful. Good sawing! Bengt-Olov Byström
